Questions

Questions patients ask

Is Dr. Bishai accepting new patients?
Accepting new patients. Dr. Bishai sees new patients at his Troy, Michigan practice for shoulder, hip, and knee concerns, whether you are scheduling directly or coming by way of a referring physician.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Bishai?
No, a referral is not required. Many patients do arrive through a referring physician, since referring-provider relationships are a large part of how patients find a sports medicine and shoulder specialist, but you are welcome to call and schedule on your own.
Does Dr. Bishai only see athletes?
No. Dr. Bishai's focus is sports medicine, but that means the mechanics of overuse and joint injury wherever they show up, not only injuries from organized sports. He sees shoulder, hip, and knee pain caused by work, daily activity, and aging joints just as often as injuries from athletics.
What conditions does Dr. Bishai treat?
A wide range of shoulder, hip, and knee conditions. On the shoulder side, that includes rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and dislocation, SLAP tears and labral injuries (tears to the labrum, the ring of cartilage that stabilizes the shoulder socket), frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, shoulder arthritis, and biceps tendonitis. For the hip and knee, Dr. Bishai treats ACL and meniscus tears, patellar instability, cartilage injuries, hip labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI, a conflict between the hip ball and socket that limits motion, hip bursitis, and muscle or tendon strains.
Does Dr. Bishai always recommend surgery?
No. Non-surgical care is where most treatment plans start, and surgery is discussed when those options have not resolved the problem. When surgery is the right next step, Dr. Bishai performs minimally invasive arthroscopy, a procedure using a small camera and instruments inserted through tiny incisions, along with open repair, stabilization surgery, and joint replacement, depending on the joint and the injury.
What is Dr. Bishai's training background?
Fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Bishai completed his fellowship at Plancher Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, after an orthopedic surgery residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is affiliated with Detroit Orthopaedic Institute.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and a list of your current medications. If you have prior imaging, a referral note, or records related to your shoulder, hip, or knee, bringing those along helps the visit move faster, though your care team can also request them directly.
Where is Dr. Bishai's office located?
Dr. Bishai sees patients in Troy, Michigan. Specific address, parking, and directions are listed on the contact page.
Will my insurance cover my visit?
It depends on your plan. The office verifies insurance and any referral requirements before your visit, so the most reliable answer comes from calling ahead rather than guessing from a general FAQ. This page is for general information and is not medical advice. Talk with Dr. Bishai's office about your specific situation before making care decisions.
